Onion Tomato Chutney.

Onion Tomato Chutney (Chennai Style)


Ingredients 


  1. 1 Large Onion or 10 shallots - cubed
  2. 4 cloves of garlic - peeled
  3. 2 medium tomatoes - cubed
  4. ¾ tsp Mustard
  5. ½ tsp Urad Dhal
  6. ¼ tsp Asafoetida
  7. 4 dry red chilli pepper/ 2 dry red chilli
  8. 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  9. 1 tsp Tamarind pulp (1 small pod)
  10. 1 tsp Gingelly oil
  11. Salt to taste

Method

  1. Heat 1 tsp Gingelly oil in a kadai and add mustard to it.
  2. After it splutters, add urad dhal, asafoetida, red chilli, one after the other sautéing for 30 seconds. Now add curry leaves, sauté for 5 secs followed by chopped onion and garlic.
  3. Sauté them till translucent.
  4. Now add chopped tomatoes and sauté until the raw smell vanishes.
  5. Add tamarind pulp and cook for 1 minute. No water should be added.
  6. Allow this sautéed mixture to cool and grind them into a fine paste.
  7. Serve hot with idlis, dosas, uthapam and kara paniyarams.
