Onion Tomato Chutney (Chennai Style)
Ingredients
- 1 Large Onion or 10 shallots - cubed
- 4 cloves of garlic - peeled
- 2 medium tomatoes - cubed
- ¾ tsp Mustard
- ½ tsp Urad Dhal
- ¼ tsp Asafoetida
- 4 dry red chilli pepper/ 2 dry red chilli
- 1 sprig Curry Leaves
- 1 tsp Tamarind pulp (1 small pod)
- 1 tsp Gingelly oil
- Salt to taste
Method
- Heat 1 tsp Gingelly oil in a kadai and add mustard to it.
- After it splutters, add urad dhal, asafoetida, red chilli, one after the other sautéing for 30 seconds. Now add curry leaves, sauté for 5 secs followed by chopped onion and garlic.
- Sauté them till translucent.
- Now add chopped tomatoes and sauté until the raw smell vanishes.
- Add tamarind pulp and cook for 1 minute. No water should be added.
- Allow this sautéed mixture to cool and grind them into a fine paste.
- Serve hot with idlis, dosas, uthapam and kara paniyarams.
